MYA B
"Mya B. daringly undertakes to bring to focus our American heritage of sexual puritanism and hyposcricy,... a subject that is only undertaken casually, through sexuality is such a strong undercurrent to the stability of all our lives as Americans."
(Chickenbones: A Journal - by Randolph Lewis)
A supporter recently said "Having a conversation about sexual silence in the black community and the images of black women in the media without mention Mya B.'s Silence: In Search of Black Female Sexuality in America is a sin." Many agree.
Recently,Presidental candidate Barack Obama's former Pastor, Jeremiah Wright was critisized for some comments he made regarding race in this country. The firestorm of the media attacking him, created negative press around Barack Obama's judgement that spurred countless debates on racism in this country - precisely some of the issues that Mya B. raises in her amazing and provocative documentary, Silence: In Search of Black Female Sexuality in America. A film that not only Rev. Jeremiah Wright is a part of, a film where he talks about the sexual silence in the church and the community: a community where we have a lost connection with our youth and the highest HIV/AIDS ratio in the country.
Shoot Films, Not People Productions, a campaign to involve innovative community - based organizations in sustaining a national dialogue and generating solution based workshops using the film in communities across the country. Some of our national and local community partners include: Langston Hughes Library, Project Butterfly, Youth Organizations United, Bernard College, Lincoln University, Yale University, Smith College, Bernard College, Columbia University, Purchase College, Cornell University, Everlasting Life Resturant, Salsa Organization, and New Afrikan Woman Caucaus.
In addition to this, Shoot Films, Not People Productions outreach campaign is putting together a Silence: In Search of Black Female Sexuality tour to further conversations about the sexual silence in our community as a whole and analyzing the negative sexual stereotypes concerning black women in the media.
